Mask
System of Representation
Explanation by the mask
I have made an “outgoing mask” because people often find me outgoing and cheerful. And they’re not wrong but I often pretend to be a bit more cheerful than I actually am I think (this sounds so emo). When I’m at home or on my own I am quite reserved and calm. Being this outgoing person is kind of my mask. I think I do this so the people around me will feel better.

The element of outgoing is symbolized by the bright colors and even the confetti. But also a bit more literal because the folded paper is 3-dimensional and is actually “outgoing”. The folding is responsive; you can touch it and it will bounce right back (like conversations).
Knolling metal heads
For the knolling assignment, I have really focused on the clothes that are associated with metal/that metal heads wear. The other members of my group looked also looked at fashion but also hand gestures and typography.
Looking back at it (after the feedback) I could also have looked at other elements of metal, like the make-up. It also became clear that there are a lot of different sub-genres within metal. These clothing articles really relate to black metal fashion.
Our chosen social group is metal heads. We have chosen this group because, even though some of us sometimes listen to metal, we think we're very different from metal heads. Personally, I almost feel like they're are the opposite of myself.

Technically speaking, someone who listens to metal on a somewhat frequent basis is already a metal head. For this assignment, we have chosen to focus more on the more "devoted" metal heads.
The first step to understanding our social group better was to collect 50 images or more of this group. I have chosen to make a Pinterest board of metal heads. I have chosen to use this platforms because it creates a fun contrast between the platform itself and the research.
This is the link to the board:

Research on metal heads
To research metal heads, we decided to pick out certain elements of metal heads. I did some research on the spikes and (excessive) make-up in metal fashion.
Instruction
For the instruction I want to make it for fashionistas. The reason for this is because I often see these fashionistas wearing band shirts from metal bands like Slayer and Metallica. And I often hear that these fashionistas don't listen to it and sometimes don't even know that they are wearing band shirts. I once had to explain that Nirvana is not a brand but a band. So I started wondering if there are more elements of metal fashion fashionistas could learn about. And I think there are some more aspects of metal fashion that should be explained, especially because these elements appear more often in main stream fashion.
Instruction: end results
These are the end results for the instruction assignment. I made a glossy/magazine for fashionistas. The theme is, of course, metal head fashion.
The introduction explains why I have chosen to make a magazine for fashionistas with metal as a theme
I also added a few advertisements that I think both fashionistas and metal heads find interesting
This article is based on an already existing article by Vice but I think I could make it into a nice addition for this magazine. I added a few elements such as complementary images, introduction and a conclusion.
This is an article that I found rather insightful and that's why I put it in the magazine. I added a few pictures that fit the article
I think I have learned quite a lot of new things while making this magazine.
I made it in InDesign, which is still a rather new program for me and so I have learnt some practical information about it.
Besides technical skills, I learned about how a magazine like this should be consistent (in typography, images, color etc).
It was also rather challenging to find advertisements that fit fashionistas and metal heads (and that are also high quality).
In the end, turns out that designing a magazine for a different audience, in which you don't fit in, is challenging but fun
Social group: difference, type, stereotype
2nd mapping:
stereotype VS type
For the second mapping we have tried to focus a lot more on behavior, instead of the looks.
