System Interface User
Collection of 100 interfaces
https://acniffy.tumblr.com/
My 3 favorite collected interfaces are:
1. Serving suggestion

Who is the user of the interface?
The company who makes this taco sauce but also the consumer

Which Systems are connected by the interface?
It connects the maker of the product, the product itself and the consumer

How does the interface affect the user?
This interface warns the consumer that there is no actual taco in this jar; but only the sauce. If this warning wasn’t on there, maybe the consumer could feel betrayed. This interface protects the user (the company) for getting complaints and maybe getting sued. The interface works protective and as some kind of warning almost.

How can the user interact with the interface?
The user can use it in a way that they are not accountable for customers being disappointed -> legal reasons

What are the material properties of the interface?
Print-based - Still - Physical - Object
This is one of my favorite interfaces because even though it is an informing interface, it seems rather "dumb" to me. But on the other hand, it is smart that companies put this on here so they don't get sued. It feels like something that you can often see in the USA. I see this serving suggestion on almost every product.

2. Sign (it says that the doorbell is broken and you’ll have to shout “ding dong” really hard)

Who is the user of the interface?
The residents of the house and people wo want to visit the house

Which Systems are connected by the interface?
It connects the house, the people living in it and people who want to enter the house.

How does the interface affect the user?
The interface lets the outside world know that the doorbell is broken (in name of the residents); it informs the user. It also may bring up some emotions (laughter).

How can the user interact with the interface?
The user can read the sign and follow the instructions; yell “ding dong” if they want to visit the house

What are the material properties of the interface?
Physical object - Outside - Public space - Visible - Solid
This is another one of my favorite interfaces. I came to the conclusion that I am really fond of interfaces that are informing. This probably comes from my love for clarity (if things aren't clear for me I almost shut down help-). But also my love for language. I'm always scanning advertisements for mistakes and weirdly formed sentences.
This interface is also informing but also rather funny in my eyes. When I saw it, I started laughing out loud in public.
3. WdKA toilets

Who is the user of the interface?
The students (and teachers? maybe??) of WdKA writing on the bathroom walls, doors and sometimes even toilets. People only reading the texts (and not writing themselves) could also be considered as users.

Which Systems are connected by the interface?
The students are connected with each other. Either by just reading the stories and sympathizing with the strangers that wrote them. And sometimes actual conversations start on the bathroom walls.

How does the interface affect the user?
The interface maybe makes the user think differently, act differently. Sometimes the user reacts by writing themselves.

How can the user interact with the interface?
The user can read, react, sometimes fill in surveys, write (all while peeing!). Or the user can simply be amused/intrigued by the texts.

What are the material properties of the interface?
Physical - Object - Still - Inside - Private - Personal
My third favorite interface are the bathroom walls in the academy. Again, this interface is informing in a way but it also stands out. It is personal as well as public; everybody can read each others troubles, problems, ideas and straight-up nonsense.
It also offers the opportunity for everyone to participate in this interface, which I find rather unique.
Designing an interface for WdKA, to keep 1.5 meter distance
Possible interactions at WdKA:
- Printing
- Working in a workspace
- Walking around (bumping into each other??)
- Getting feedback
- Buying supplies in the shop
- Renting supplies in the rent shop
- Chatting with friends
- Getting food in the canteen
- Eating in the canteen
- Getting books from the library
- Working in the stations
- Station skills
- Trying out new techniques/machines
- Getting help from teachers/students
- Using school computers

Most interesting ones for me are working in work spaces, walking (ans possibly bumping into each other) and socializing. This is because I think the virus can spread more easily if we don't find a way to do these interactions in a safe way. Now it's my job to think of a way to solve it.
Users and interaction mood board
At first I wanted to draw my floor stickers on the floor plan of WdKA. Turns out that this is not the best way to visualize my design because I want to focus on the work spaces (work spaces also align with what the rest of my group is making which is nice). On the floorplan you can't see the tables, chairs, computers, machines etc.
In a feedback session, I found out that detailed sketches/drawings would also suffice as an end result
Why have I chosen for fruit in my design?
For starters, it fits with the whole "rebranding"; from social distancing to physical distancing. This is a fun way of making things clear.
Besides this, it also gives a sense of "stay healthy". And, because it is for the academy, it should speak to a large group. I think fruit is one of the most general things that is still cute (and not offensive).
For the end results of the interface, I have chosen to draw over pictures of WdKA. I have also used this technique in two of my sketches. I found that this was an effective way of working because the designs really fit well with the room.
