The idea to make an instruction for people who don't know much about this social group and misuse their symbols came quite early after learning about them. While researching I came across many examples where people 'steal' from the metal heads culture for their own benefit. For instance many use their fashion symbols as a fashion trend. By misusing their symbols this is arguably cultural appropriation. Moreover I found it fascinating how there is some sort of code language within this social group, which outsider aren't able to understand. For example their different types of garments have a specific meaning.
These 2 attitudes I learned were my starting point for the final instruction. My goal is to communicate this issue and make clear that cultural appropriation is insulting towards the social group, by explaining the message behind these signifies and symbols.
At first I struggled to find an audience which isn't too broad. After the feedback session it became more clear that an example of this 'stealing is needed. The first image that came to my mind was the Kardashian wearing a Slayer T-shirt.
I decided to write an open letter directly to the Kardashian due to almost all of them being accused of cultural appropriation in the past.
The reason why I chose an open letter is that it delivers the message to the Kardashians as well as to the public. The next question I asked myself was "what is the way in"?, meaning how am I able to draw their attention towards this instruction.
Here I established a punch line relating to their show "Keeping up with the Kardashians". This punch line is related to them as well as speaks directly to them, addressing that they should keep up with their research and knowledge.
For the medium I decided to create a small informative laperello book, making it easy to transport and bring along. It serves as some sort of dictionary of the metal head social group.
Due to the audience being the Kardashian I also focused on the books appearance. Here I gathered inspiration from their Make-up brand 'Kylie Cosmetics' and its packaging. The goal of the books appearance is to make it look like an accessory and make the Kardashians feel good with it. This way they are not ashamed to use it and feel 'cool'.
